Dear members of the SBFC,

I wish to beg forgiveness of the Club members for my lack of participation in the last few months. Two recent losses of family members and my own uncertain health have kept me housebound for a number of months.

Now that the club has been approved by the CKC it is time to get moving! In order to apply for a National Specialty we will need the Sanctioned Matches to take place sometime this summer. As soon as that is accomplished we will need to apply for the Specialty priority date and that application needs to reach the CKC no later than six months prior to the requested date. Prior to all that, of course, we must decide as a club where the show will take place, who will judge and with which all breed show. It's a lot to do in a relatively short time.

I need to hear from everyone as to their recommendations for the judge and the venue and also from those members who had offered to hold the matches. Once I have heard from the membership we will put an official ballot together and mail it out to all the members.

Please participate in your Club!!

The next order of business will be to hold a general election so please think about offering your services as a Club Officer. You can place your name on the ballot or you can have someone nominate you.

Your Club needs you!

Thank you,
Giselle

Please follow the link below to find a membership application form, renewal or new.
Printing the form out and mailing it in to the club will save the club postage.
This way we only have to have one mail out confirming membership with membership cards.
Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

Saint Rescue Update Trinity of Hope

Daisy Needs our Help
Red Deer Area

Daisy May disappeared from home on the evening of Monday 29th in Deer Ridge.

Daisy May was rescued from a puppy mill and was badly abused and our family has worked with her and loved her since her rescue. She was in the care of a family friend who failed to see the back gate was open.

She is very timid and shy around strangers due to the abuse she received at a young age. She is spade, micro-chipped and a little on the small side for a St. Bernard, but she is a very loving dog and the family wants her back desperately.

If you have found her or know of her whereabouts please call cellular: 780-964-3517 or 780-458-0496 and ask for Paul.

I see that the club has now been officially recognized by the CKC. I know we have a constitution but do we have a code of ethics? Are we going to have guidelines for breeding, health-testing, etc.? I would like to see a minimum age for breeding set for both males and females, strong recommendations for testing hips, elbows, eyes, etc. The Canadian Mastiff Club has mandatory testing for these and more. The dog doesn't have to pass the tests but must be tested to be bred. That way, you and generations to come, know what to expect in the descendants.

Another point. Will there be online meetings? It's not perfect but with people all over the country, it would help get a dialogue going. Will we be setting up a saint list of our own strictly for members?

Just a few questions I thought I'd ask.

Thanks again Denise for the frequent newsletters.

Caution

You probably meant to be kind by taking your pet with you today, but you could be risking his life!

A pet's normal body temperature is between 38 and 39 degrees Celcius. A pet, like a child can only withstand a higher body temperature for a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage-or even death. On a hot summer day the air inside of a car heats up very quickly. On an 29 degree day, for example, the temperature inside your car-with the windows slightly open-will reach 49 degrees. On warmer days it will go even higher!

The superheated air in a closed car interferes with the pet's normal cooling process. Unlike humans, dogs d not perspire to cool their bodies down-they pant. When the air they intake is overheated the evaporation that usually occurs during panting does not take place and the body temperature rises

If your pet is overcome by heat exhaustion you can give immediate first aid by immersing him or her in cold water then immediately transport to your Vet

Tribute to Hercules

Start Over
Thoughts from Herc's friends

Mark's beloved Herc left him and us yesterday, June 29th.

Mark and Herc were and are a sterling example of what the phrase man's best friend was meant to express.

My heart goes out to you Mark. We've all been there but for each one of us the journey is a lonely one.

You expressed to me at the EKC shows how privileged you were to have Herc and how much you accomplished together. With Herc by your side, you put a face on the purebred dog fancy and it was a proud one - one from which everyone in the Halifax Kennel Club benefitted. Whether it was the Drill Team, the Reading Program, the Oxygen Masks, standing in for a great St. Bernard hero, the first Grand Champion in the Breed or just being the 'big guy' that all the kids loved, Herc trooped through each task with good humour and his big heart.

At this time, Mark, you are once again blessed with your new charge, Roc. New memories to make, new goals to set and walking in very big footsteps that set the path for him.

With Roc, I wish you all the love and companionship that you shared with the beloved Herc but one thing more, I wish that all of us had the honour of loving a dog as much as you loved the big guy.

If you wish to send a private message to Mark, you may reach him at mark.grant1@ns.sympatico.ca

My best

Valerie

Nine years ago this past spring, I drove to the New England area to meet up with friends from Ohio who were returning my Saint Bernard to me. My “Theodore” had been in Ohio for 7 months standing at stud for not only my friends’ bitches, but several others as well. One bitch in particular, named “Francy”, had her puppies in late February 2000.

One of the puppies from Francy’s litter was making the trek with me to his new home in Nova Scotia. I had the pleasure of spending a couple of days traveling with this adorable bundle of fur who loved to follow his Daddy whenever we stopped for potty breaks.

I remember the excited, expectant look on Mark’s and Sandy’s faces when we met “on the road” in Truro so they could take their new boy home. They adored him from day 1 and he adored them. Mark was Herc’s best friend and Herc would do anything Mark asked of him, even modeling those oxygen masks.

Mark and Herc were a great team whether it was in the show ring winning BIS or in the library while kids read to Herc and Mark helped if needed.

The past few weeks Herc had started to not do so well. His eyesight was failing and he slept most of the time. Things seemed to get progressively worse more recently and the time came to make a decision on what would be best for Herc. Today, June 29, Mark very unselfishly let Herc go to The Rainbow Bridge. We can all imagine how difficult this was for Mark and Sandy. It is never easy to say good-bye and to let go, no matter how necessary it may be. We share their loss.

MBIS AM/CAN GR. Ch. Slaton's Hunk Of Burn'N Love, CD, CGN

was an out-standing ambassador for the breed and he made hundreds of friends through his many ventures. Mark and Sandy did a great job with Herc and I am so very grateful to them for giving him such a wonderful home.
Pat
My heart feels the hurt, I am so sorry, Herc owned your heart. Take care of your heart and if there is anything I can do, just say.

Perhaps they and not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy.

I believe each time I look into the stars, that my best friends are watching over me, as Herc will always watch over you.

Take care of your heart.
Luv your prairie pals

Denise

I am a huge Herc fan and am so sad to hear of his passing.  He was the perfect ambassador for Saints everywhere.  I am thinking of you Mark in this hard time.

Shelley

Mark, so sorry to hear about Herc's passing.  Nine years is way too short of a time to love and be loved by such a great companion.  In some way it is comforting to know that Herc made a great impression on all those who met him, including me.  Thought you might like to have a copy of the pics I took of Herc in July 2004 here at the Fredericton Show.  They are not very good, but all photos are precious at this time - I know as I always appreciated the pics people sent me when I lost Clancy last year.

Carol

It is with the grief that I know this news.

You and Hercules were the perfect picture of the man and his dog.  I wish you the memory of the good times in spite of this évenement.  I wish that many dogs find an owner like you. Good trip to Hercules.

Thank you Mark for your example...

Guy

That is very nice that you are having this tribute to Herc and Mark done. What a team they were and what wonderful breed ambassadors they were. They helped our breed by making people see what the possibilities were. We're so sorry for your loss.

Sincerely,
Stan and Joan

Although I do not know you personally, I feel as if I do know you from your Herc updates on one of the Saint Bernard lists.
It was the articles that you shared with us that got me interested in taking Mandy to volunteer in the Reading for Paws program in our area.  While we visit the nursing homes regularly, we have only been to the library reading program a few times.  But we do so enjoy our visits.  You were our inspiration.
I know that you have a heavy heart now, and know that many of us share your tears.  May the wonderful memories that you have help you through this very difficult time.

Amy

Mark, I am so very sorry to read of Herc's passing. You and he were blessed to have each other.
Sharon in Israel - remembering Ralphie -- March 8, 1997 - February 27, 2008

Don, Magnum, and I are so sorry to hear of the loss of Herc.  You did so many wonderful ventures with this guy.  Not only will Herc be missed by all those with whom he touched in their lives, but by you and your family.
Herc is resting peacefully now and you will always have your wonderful memories.....Herc's foot prints will always be in your heart.
Our Magnum turned 10 on May 24, and we cherish each and every day we have him to love and spoil.  Rest softly big guy!!
Liz, Don, and Magnum

Maureen and I were so sorry to hear about Herc's passing.  He was truly
one of the most noble and gentle boys I've ever had the pleasure to meet.
We know firsthand just how great the void is; it's just 15 months since
we lost our Storm and there are many times that we'll still look at each
other and say "You remember when Stormy..."  We still miss "The Goof"
terribly, even though there are the 2 girls filling the house with hair.
We will be watching Roc's progress with interest, while fondly
remembering your gentle giant.
Rick and Maureen
Our sincere belated condolences and empathy knowing that you have had to
move on to a new chapter maybe even a new book as of Tuesday past.  The path
that is the legacy of Hercules will no doubt, shine through Rock as only you
the good & loving Master, can share and pass on those experiences to him.

Wishing you continued success in that endeavor.
Lary & Marie
It is sad to lose a canine friend, that was part of the family.
Herc was a great representative of the breed, and his legacy will live on  for ever.
It was my privilege to have judged him over the many years that you showed him.
Look to the future.
Bud

You and Herc are an unforgettable team.  My heart goes out to you & Sandy today, and you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.  Herc was such a fabulous fellow, and his "pit crew" certainly helped him to become everything wonderful that he could be.  Take care, and god speed to the gentle giant.
Mel

Dear Mark & Sandy

We are deeply sorry for your loss. I know that words will not help as we have went through the loss of a best friend before. The best thing you can do is to remember the good times as there is many but I do have to admit that the pain still runs deep after many tears.
Take Care
Alan & Jaunita

Hercules Highlights

MBIS Am/ Can Gh Slaton’s Hunk of Burn’n Love, Can CD, CGN (Hercules) was born February 23, 2000 in Canton, Ohio USA.

Following his father (BISS Am/Can Ch. Kennebank Theodore Von Linc TT Am/Can CD/ WPX and great grandfather (BIS Am/Can Ch Kennebank Lincoln Von Abraham TT Am/Can CD, Hercules has enjoyed a wonderful show career in Canada and the United States.

Always owner handled “Herc” earned his Canadian Championship July 17,2001 under All Breed Canadian Judge Sharon Francis.

A few months later on October 17, 2001 he completed the last leg of his Companion Dog Title under Canadian Judge Michael Calhoun at the Island Dog Club Show and Trials.

These titles did not come easy with Hercules earning most of his points to complete his Canadian Championship at the Group Judging Level and there were some interesting moments in the Obedience Ring.

Hercules was an “entertainer” in the Obedience Ring.

On more than one occasion he decided to leave the ring on the recall…jumping over the ring gates and back in coming to a sit in front of me awaiting my command to finish. He also liked to have a quick nap during the down exercise!

All Breed Canadian Judge Barb Iness awarded Hercules his first Working Group win on June 6, 2002 at the South Shore Kennel Club Show and Trials…the first of twenty-six over his show career.

Hercules earned his Canine Good Neighbor Certificate June 8, 2002 at the Oromocto Shows in New Brunswick…. the same weekend he won the Working Group all four shows.

We earned our first Best In Show under Canadian All Breed Judge Michel Bouchard September 9, 2002 at the Pictou County Kennel Club Show and Trials. In addition judges Heather Langfield, Cheryl Myers-Egerton and Breeder Judge Dave Patterson have awarded Hercules a Best In Show.

After a successful show May 21, 2005 in Vacationland, Maine, Hercules completed his American Kennel Club Championship under Judge Bud Haverstock.

Hercules placed in the Top Five Show dogs in his breed between 2001 and 2006. In the years 2002, 2003,2004 and 2006 he was the number one Saint Bernard in Canada.

In August of 2007 the CKC awarded Hercules with his Grand Champion Title.

Hercules retired after his last show on September 3, 2007 at the Halifax Kennel Club.

We have enjoyed a wonderful “ride” together.

Help Your Pet be COOL this Summer

It's great to enjoy summer with your pet. But it's also the time when they have the greatest risk of injury and heat-related health problems. So here are some tips on keeping things cool this summer.

Watch for signs of HEATSTROKE- Rapid panting, hot skin, twitching muscles, a dazed look. Wrap them in a towel soaked with cool, not cold, water. In severe cases, place them in the bathtub. Heatstroke can be fatal. See your vet as soon as possible.

NEVER, EVER leave your pet in a PARKED CAR- Not even if you crack the windows or park in the shade. On a 70F day, the car temperature can rise above 150F in minutes. It's EXTREMELY dangerous. And the Number One cause of heatstroke.

Always provide Plenty of Fresh Water- Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet and by panting. Evaporation from the wet surfaces of their mouth and nose helps lower body temperature.

Watch for Hot Pavement and Beaches- Sensitive paws burn easily.

Find a COOL Spot- For indoor pets, keep the air circulating with a child-proof fan or air conditioner. Provide shade for outdoor pets. And a gentle sprinkle from a hose is always appreciated.

Watch Exercise and Diet- Don't encourage exercise during the hottest part of the day. And let them eat less. Overeating can lead to overheating.

Not Every Dog Paddles Well- Animals in the water for the first time should be eased in, never thrown or chased in. Don't let them drink from pools, streams or the ocean. And, if they swim, rinse them off. Salt and minerals can damage a dog's coat.

Sunburn is No Day at the Beach- It hurts. Saints have very fair skin, white under all of their hair, and are especially susceptible. Limit their exposure.

Drowning

ASSES
If not breathing

Treatment
CPR - follow  the ABC’s
Can use the Heimlich to remove the water from the throat

Prevention

Watch pets around water

If pet likes swimming and conditions are unsafe, KEEP ON LEASH
When boating or near water often, USE A LIFE JACKET for your pet.

Available at most pet supply stores, even Canadian Tire

Roc earned two more points at weekend shows. This was our first time in the ring together and we had lots of fun!

Roc went WD, BB, BPIB each day to earn 2 more points. Judge Tom Burke awarded Roc with BPIG in the last show yesterday.

One other Saint …a two year old male, was entered in all shows but was absent for two of the shows.

Roc has lots of reach and drive. His top line now level, head piece is “outstanding for the breed” ( comment from all judges) and he is developing very nice.

He now has 7 points and a BPIG with limited showing.
